 Customer Services Clerk

The Customer Service Clerk provides a welcoming and high-quality customer service experience to all patrons. This position requires strong interpersonal skills and proficiency with current technology. The role primarily involves staffing the circulation desk, assisting patrons with reference and readers’ advisory services, checking out materials, and managing library accounts. It also includes instructing and supporting patrons in the use of library equipment, software, and services. This position is cross-trained in the Youth Services Department and may be called upon to cover the Youth Circulation desk and assist with programs as needed. The Customer Service Clerk reports to the Adult Services & Circulation Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

Customer Service

  • Perform all opening, closing, and daily operational procedures.
  • Provide prompt, courteous, and effective assistance to patrons regarding library materials, equipment, and services.
  • Demonstrate proactive problem-solving skills and sound judgment to adapt procedures and maintain excellent customer service.
  • Deliver accurate reference and readers’ advisory assistance in person, by phone, and electronically.
  • Handle small cash transactions accurately.
  • Foster a welcoming environment for all patrons and ensure safe conditions for staff, the public, and library operations.
  • Positively represent the library’s mission, vision, and values to both staff and the public.
  • Resolve conflicts professionally and effectively with adults, caregivers, and minors.
  • Ensure equitable and respectful service for patrons of all ages and abilities.

Collection Development

  • Support collection development in the Adult Services Department as directed by the Adult Services & Circulation Manager.
  • Tasks may include shelf reading, shifting, evaluating and repairing materials, mending, processing, weeding, and ordering.

Continuing Education

  • Stay informed about trends and updates at the local and regional library level.
  • Participate in professional development relevant to areas of responsibility.
  • Stay current on pop culture, social media, and patron interests to enhance programming and outreach.
  • Read professional literature and attend meetings, webinars, and workshops as appropriate. 

Programming & Outreach

  • Collaborate with the Adult Services Programmer and Youth Services Manager on programming and outreach efforts.
  • Be familiar with scheduled programs to promote participation and answer patron inquiries.
  • Create and maintain displays throughout the library based on themes, seasons, authors, or special occasions.
  • Assist with outreach efforts such as Homebound deliveries, Senior Center visits, and other community events.
  • Participate in community engagement activities as needed.

 Other

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of library policies and procedures and exercise sound judgment when applying them.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, including compiling reports and completing administrative tasks.

Qualifications

  • Education: Completion of some college or university courses preferred 
  • Experience: 1–3 years of library experience or experience in a related field preferred.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, email, social media, and web-based applications.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Responsive to communication via text and email.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate positively and effectively to patrons of all ages and abilities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of teamwork in a small library setting, as well as the ability to work independently.

Youth Services Programmer, Elementary (25 Hours per week)

The Youth Services Programmer will be primarily responsible for planning and implementing programs, services, and outreach activities for the Library’s elementary-aged patrons (ages 5–11). This position is also cross-trained in Circulation and may occasionally be required to cover the Circulation desk. This is a half-time, 25-hour-per-week, non-exempt position. The Youth Services Programmer reports to the Youth Services Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

Customer Service

  • Provide prompt, courteous, and direct assistance to all patrons with basic information regarding the use of Library materials, equipment, and services.
  • Provide reliable and accurate reference and readers’ advisory assistance to patrons in person, on the telephone, or electronically.
  • Offer welcoming customer service to all patrons and ensure safe conditions for staff, public, and building operations.
  • Positively reflect the Library’s mission, vision, and values to staff and the public.
  • Address and resolve conflicts effectively and professionally with caregivers and minors.
  • Ensure equitable and respectful interactions with patrons of varying ages and abilities.

Collection Development

  • Assist with collection development in the Youth and Young Adult departments as assigned by the Youth Services Manager. This includes, but is not limited to, ordering, processing, and weeding.

  • Participate in community activities as requested.

Other

  • Familiarize yourself with Library policies and procedures and make decisions in accordance with them.

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in child development, education, or a related field preferred.
  • 1-3 years of experience working directly with youth ages birth-17, including providing programs and customer service.
